Why Upcycle Interiors Ltd (UIL) Just Joined the Painting and Decorating Association
Because "trust us" is easy to say and harder to prove.
Anyone can put "professional" on a van. Upcycle Interiors Ltd (UIL) has just done something that actually backs it up — we've joined the Painting and Decorating Association (PDA), the UK's largest trade body for professional, insured painters and decorators.
What is the PDA?
The PDA was formed in July 2002 from a merger of the British Decorators Association (founded 1894) and the Painting & Decorating Federation (founded 1942) — so the standards it upholds have well over a century of history behind them. It's a non-profit, UK-wide trade association representing painters and decorators from sole traders to national contractors, and it's also a Trade Association member of Build UK, the leading representative body for the construction industry.
To carry the PDA's quality marque, members have to meet a comprehensive criteria covering experience, workmanship and customer service. They commit to the PDA's Code of Practice, must be fully insured, and are backed by the Association's arbitration and conciliation service — which exists specifically to give customers peace of mind if something ever needs resolving.
Why we've joined
We didn't need the PDA to tell us how to run a job — we've been doing that since 2018. But membership isn't for us; it's for you, our clients across Weymouth, Portland, Dorchester, Fordington, Charlton Down, Abbotsbury and West Bay. It's a second, independent layer of verification that sits alongside our own credentials: Trading Standards Approved via Dorset Council's Buy With Confidence scheme, AXA insurance, DBS-checked staff, and a licensed waste carrier registration.
Dave from down the pub can tell you he's reliable. A national trade body with a Code of Practice, a vetting process and an arbitration service backing him up is a different proposition entirely — and the badge is already on the van to prove it.
What membership actually gets us — and you
Joining a trade body isn't just a badge for the website. The PDA backs it with real support, and most of it flows straight through to how we run your job:
Legal support and legal insurance, free. Contract disputes, employment questions, tax queries — we have somewhere to turn that isn't Google.
Mediation and arbitration. An independent route to resolve any disagreement, rather than it becoming your problem to chase.

A public member directory profile, which means our PDA membership, our work examples and our accreditation are independently verifiable — not just something we claim on our own website.

Paint Green
One PDA initiative worth a specific mention: Paint Green, the Association's sustainability scheme for the painting and decorating trade — covering responsible disposal of paint and materials, and reducing the industry's environmental footprint. It sits comfortably alongside how we already work. Upcycling and heritage preservation over rip-out-and-replace has been part of UIL's approach since day one — see our own green practices — so this is one PDA principle we didn't need much persuading on.
Why it's important
Trade associations exist because the construction industry has a trust problem — and painting and decorating, being one of the easiest trades to "have a go" at, attracts more than its fair share of cowboys. The PDA's own case for membership is straightforward: it brings businesses together to drive up standards, provide technical expertise and create accountability that a single unregulated tradesperson simply can't offer on their own.

Vetted quality. PDA members are assessed on workmanship and experience before they're allowed to use the quality marque.
Insurance and accountability. Full insurance isn't optional, and there's a formal route to resolve disputes if something goes wrong — you're not just taking someone's word for it.
A Code of Practice. As PDA member Stuart Yates put it: "Having a Code of Practice — and adhering to it — puts decorators on a different level and gives potential customers peace of mind." That's exactly the standard we hold ourselves to on every job, PDA or not.
Ongoing standards, not a one-off badge. Membership means staying current with techniques, safety regulations and industry best practice — not a certificate earned once and forgotten.
