What Does A Professional Handyman Do When The Sun Comes Out?
Six exterior jobs from one glorious hot week in Portland and Dorchester — and a masterclass in why patios fail.
When the forecast finally turns, we turn with it. One of the quiet advantages of a multi-skilled team at Upcycle Interiors Ltd (UIL) is that we can plan around the British weather instead of being ambushed by it — so when a hot, dry week landed, we lined up the outside work and made hay. Painting, paving, gutters, repairs at height: here’s a week in the life of a professional handyman service, entirely alfresco.
Several of these clients are previous clients — people who’ve used us before and come straight back. Across Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester, and out to Wyke Regis, Sutton Poyntz, Portesham and Martinstown, that’s how most of our diary fills.
Job 1: The patio that never stood a chance (Portland)
Our client’s patio slabs had worked loose and started rocking. Lift one, and the crime scene reveals itself:
Here’s what we found, and it’s a textbook lesson in how not to lay paving. The slabs were bedded on dabs — isolated blobs of sand and cement rather than a full mortar bed. Worse, the mix was made with soft building sand instead of sharp sand. And the slabs had never been primed.
Why does each of those matter? Dabs leave the slab supported on a few points, so every footstep flexes it until the bond snaps and it rocks. A slab should be supported on 80-100% coverage (not 30%!)! Soft building sand is for bricklaying mortar — it’s smooth, rounded and weak. Sharp sand is coarse and angular; mixed with cement it behaves like a mini concrete, which is exactly what a slab needs beneath it. And an unprimed slab barely bonds to its bed at all — the mortar dries against dust and the two simply part company. Wrong bed, wrong sand, no primer: that patio was destined to fail. It didn’t stand a chance.
A patio doesn’t fail on the day it rocks. It fails on the day it’s laid.
We lifted the failed areas, cleaned up, and relaid on a proper full bed of sharp sand and cement with the slabs primed. Done on our hourly rate under our Schedule of Rates — more on that in a moment.
Job 2: Fence repair and more paving (Dorchester)
Same week, different garden: a fence brought back to strength and another set of slabs relaid.
Once you know what good bedding looks like, you can’t unsee bad bedding. We’re now at the point where we can diagnose a failed patio from the doorbell.
Job 3: A bike store built to fit (Portland)
Off-the-shelf storage never quite fits the space. This side passage got a timber storage-and-bike shed built to its exact footprint — pent roof, ledged door, and not an inch wasted:
Job 4: Dormer repairs and exterior painting (Dorchester)
Two dormer windows, twenty-odd years of Dorset weather, zero maintenance. The bargeboards and cladding had been stripped bare by sun and salt-laden rain:
Timber like this doesn’t need replacing — it needs rescuing, and promptly, because bare timber drinks water and rot follows. We repaired, prepared and repainted both dormers in a smart black finish:
That’s the whole roofline smartened for a fraction of the cost of new cladding — and protected for years to come.
Job 5: A gutter and water butt for the shed (Dorchester)
A small job with an outsized payoff: guttering fitted to the shed, plumbed into a water barrel. Free water for the garden all summer, and no more rain sheeting off the shed roof onto the fence line:
Job 6: Dry verge trim after rendering (Portland)
After our client’s property was re-rendered, the roof verge — where the tiles meet the top of the wall — was left exposed and unfinished:
We fitted a neat custom-made dry verge trim along the full edge: a clean white line that caps the junction, keeps the weather out of the roof edge, and finishes the render job properly.
The Schedule of Rates: hourly work, zero mystery
Most of this week’s work ran on an hourly rate — and that phrase makes some people nervous, usually because they’ve been burned by a vague day rate and a surprise invoice. So we do it differently.
Varied repair work like this is quoted under our Schedule of Rates — a written document, agreed before we start, that sets out exactly how the project cost is calculated: the rates, what counts as chargeable time, how materials are handled – all backed by our contract (read it here). The final bill isn’t a number plucked from the air at the end; it’s arithmetic the client could do themselves. Clear, written, transparent — that’s the only way we work, whether it’s a fixed-price quotation or an hourly “Schedule of Rates”. And we send 94.2% of our written quotes on the same day we visit.
