Our Green Ethos
Recycling normally involves breaking a material down to its raw form and then manufacturing a new product from it. For example, glass bottles can be melted down and used to produce new bottles.
Although recycling reduces waste, the process still requires significant energy for collection, transport and remanufacturing. In many cases the resulting product has a similar value or quality to the original item that was discarded.
Upcycling takes this idea one step further.
Instead of breaking a material down to its raw form, an existing item or “waste” material is reused directly, often with only minimal processing. This greatly reduces the energy required compared with traditional recycling.
Crucially, the material is not just reused — its value is improved. Something that might otherwise have been discarded is transformed into a more useful, distinctive or higher-quality item.
This principle is at the heart of what we do at UIL — restoring, repurposing and improving existing materials wherever possible rather than simply replacing them. The very nature of the process encourages creative thinking and often produces unique, one-of-a-kind results. Upcycle Interiors works closely with our clients to re-imagine ordinary or discarded materials and turn them into something bespoke.
Our Paint Green Status
To achieve Paint Green status, PDA members must commit to reducing waste by signing up to a paint container recycling scheme and reducing, re-using or recycling waste paint.
Our Pledge
As a member of the Painting and Decorating Association, we commit to reducing waste and promoting environmentally-friendly practices within our business on a day-to-day basis. We also aim to increase the sustainability targets we set year on year.
At Upcycle Interiors Ltd (UIL), environmental responsibility is not a marketing exercise or a passing trend – it is a practical mindset that shapes how we work every day. Sustainability is built into our identity, quite literally reflected in our name, and guides the decisions we make on site, in the workshop and in the office.
Our approach centres on a simple but effective principle: reduce, reuse and recycle wherever possible, while never compromising on the quality, durability or safety of our work. We believe that the most sustainable outcome is one that lasts.
Putting Our Values into Practice
We prioritise the use of water-based emulsions and paints wherever suitable, reducing harmful emissions while still delivering professional, long-lasting finishes.
Reclaimed timber is incorporated into projects whenever appropriate, and when new timber is required, we only use FSC-certified sources.
We regularly upcycle and build bespoke furniture from reclaimed materials, extending their lifespan and reducing waste.
Our workshop and vans are organised using reusable storage solutions, including mushroom crates, tins and boxes, minimising single-use plastics.
We work with an environmentally conscious print supplier that offers carbon-neutral products produced on FSC-certified materials.
Wherever possible, we source materials from local Weymouth suppliers, reducing transport-related emissions while actively supporting our local economy.
Sustainable Working Beyond the Tools
Our commitment to sustainability extends beyond the job site:
All quotes and invoices are issued electronically to significantly reduce paper use.
Office stationery includes pens made from recycled materials.
Internal documents and meeting materials are frequently printed on the reverse of paper already destined for recycling.
Reflecting our creative, resource-conscious ethos, our office desk has been made from reclaimed kitchen worktop offcuts.
A Realistic and Responsible Approach
We are honest about the realities of our industry. Certain situations – such as treating mould, damp or water ingress – require specialist products that may not fully align with our environmental goals. Rather than presenting sustainability as all-or-nothing, we focus on making as many responsible choices as possible.
We believe that consistent, incremental improvements create far greater impact than unrealistic claims of perfection.
Supporting Customers to Make Greener Choices
We actively share practical advice with our customers, helping them make informed decisions that benefit both their homes and the environment, including:
Recommending LED lighting, which lasts up to 20 times longer than traditional bulbs, reducing waste and long-term costs.
Advising on water-saving taps and showerheads, which lower water consumption without compromising performance.
At Upcycle Interiors Ltd, sustainability is about craftsmanship with conscience. By combining thoughtful environmental decisions with high-quality workmanship, we deliver renovations that stand the test of time while contributing positively to our community and environment.
The main scheme we use is “Crown Can Back” - ‘We’re incredibly proud of our Can Back scheme which allows customers to bring back ANY empty paint can from ANY manufacturer to be recycled by us, completely free of charge. Across 2022 we recycled a whopping 1 million cans across our network of Crown Decorating Centres, but this year we know we can do better.’
