September 2025 - Heritage Sash Window Repair in Upwey

Sash Window Restoration in Upwey – Reviving Timber Beauty in Period Homes Every home tells a story, and this project started with a simple phone call. A homeowner in Upwey, Dorset  had spotted one of our flyers and reached out, desperate for help on their beautiful Grade II Listed building with three original timber sash windows  that had seen better days. When we arrived, it was clear this wasn’t a “quick fix.” Years of rot, weathering, and flaking paint had left the putty failing, the Brighton fasteners had fallen out, and the windows couldn’t even close properly. The cills had darkened from water damage, and drafts were slipping in through every gap. But beneath the decay, these period windows had potential -and we love giving old timber sash windows a new lease of life. Rolling Up Our Sleeves: Traditional Sash Window Repair The first step was carefully removing the sash windows and transporting them to our workshop. That’s where the real transformation begins. Many areas of timber were salvageable, but some sections had to be spliced with reclaimed timber , keeping the original frame intact wherever possible. One particularly challenging cill looked beyond repair at first glance, but with patience and traditional joinery techniques, we restored it to full strength. Using timber sash window repair methods  honed over years of period property restoration in Weymouth and Dorset , we preserved character while ensuring long-lasting durability. Bringing the Windows Back to Life What we did: Carefully removed the old sash windows from the house so we could work on them safely. Checked each window for rot, damage, and areas that needed fixing. Repaired and replaced sections of timber, keeping as much of the original frame as possible. Reglazed the windows and re-applied putty to seal them properly against the weather. Sanded and hand-painted the frames for a smooth, long-lasting finish. Re-fitted the windows with new fasteners so they open and close easily. Made sure every window is draught-free, watertight, and looks beautiful. The result? Three beautifully restored sash windows— draught-free, energy-efficient, and full of period charm . 🌟 Before & After Before:  rotting sash window frame in Upwey cottage.
