Trading Standards - Vetted. Grilled. Approved.
As of April 2026, Upcycle Interiors Limited is officially Trading Standards Approved — checked by Dorset Council, so you don’t have to.
Finding a tradesperson you can actually trust shouldn’t feel like a gamble. But for most homeowners in Dorset, it does.
You know the drill. You need work done on your home. You ask around. Someone recommends someone. You call three numbers — one rings out, one promises to “pop round Tuesday” and never does, and the third turns up, sucks air through his teeth, quotes you a number plucked from thin air, and asks for cash.
We started Upcycle Interiors precisely because of that experience. Upcycle Interiors was grown from the frustration of finding trusted trades who would turn up. And today, we’ve got something to show for all the years we’ve spent doing things properly.
“As of April 2026, Upcycle Interiors Limited is officially Trading Standards Approved — a fully vetted member of the national Buy With Confidence scheme, accredited by Dorset Council Trading Standards.”
Not a badge we bought. Not a directory we paid to appear in. A government-backed accreditation, run by local authority Trading Standards themselves, that we had to earn by opening our entire business up for inspection — a process that took six months from application to approval.
We have been vetted. We have been grilled. And we’d do it all again tomorrow.
What Actually Is Buy With Confidence?
Buy With Confidence (buywithconfidence.gov.uk) is a national register of Trading Standards Approved businesses — and it’s unlike any other “trusted trader” list you’ll find online, for one simple reason: it’s run entirely by local authority Trading Standards services. Not a private company. Not a review website selling top-of-page placement. Not a directory where the “verification” is a direct debit. It’s the only nationally available business approval scheme that is 100% owned, controlled and operated by independent public sector bodies, supported by more than 60 local authorities across the country.
Trading Standards, for anyone who’s never had the pleasure, are the local government officers whose job is to enforce consumer protection law. They’re the people who prosecute rogue traders, investigate scams, and protect the public from exactly the sort of cowboy behaviour this blog has never been shy about naming. When those people — the ones who spend their working lives catching the bad guys — put their name next to a business, it means something no paid-for badge ever could.
Every business listed on Buy With Confidence has been thoroughly vetted, approved, and is regularly monitored by Trading Standards to make sure standards don’t slip once the certificate is on the wall. That last part matters. This isn’t a one-off tick in a box. It’s ongoing.
And in our case, the vetting wasn’t done by some distant office at the other end of the country. It was carried out by Dorset Council Trading Standards — our own local authority. The same officers who protect consumers in Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester looked our business up and down and put their name next to ours. It doesn’t get more local, or more accountable, than that.
Why Should You Care?
Because the alternative is doing all the checking yourself — and let’s be honest about what that actually looks like.
Reviews can be bought. Five glowing stars posted in the same week, all from accounts with one review each. Take those with a pinch of salt.
Directories can be paid for. Many “find a trader” websites are advertising platforms first and vetting services a distant second.
Word of mouth only goes so far. Your neighbour’s decorator might be lovely — but is he insured? Is his paperwork in order? Has anyone ever actually checked?
Dave from down the pub checks out fine — according to Dave. Cash only, no paperwork, no comeback.
Buy With Confidence flips the burden. Instead of you playing detective, a qualified Trading Standards professional has already done the detective work — properly, independently, and with legal powers behind them.
“Trading Standards have checked us so you don’t have to.”
Do you have the time to waste on unreliable tradespeople, or do you just want it done? That question has always been at the heart of what we do. This accreditation is the independent, government-backed answer to it.
Six Months Under The Microscope
We won’t pretend this was a rubber stamp. It wasn’t. From application to approval, the process took six months — and every check was carried out directly by Trading Standards, not outsourced to a third party. In the scheme’s own words: “This includes financial background, complaint records, customer references and, where relevant, criminal record checks for staff working in or around people’s homes.”
Here’s what those six months involved for UIL:
A full application and background check. Dorset Council Trading Standards examined our financial background, our trading history and our complaint records. A business with a trail of unhappy customers doesn’t get through the door.
A full audit by a qualified Trading Standards professional. Our paperwork, our terms and conditions, our quotations, our insurance, our licences, even our training records — all of it inspected, questioned, and held up against consumer protection law. This is the “grilling” part, and grilled we were.
Proof of qualifications, experience and insurance. Our AXA insurance (policy no. TP1036224, covering work by up to 4 people), our upper-tier Waste Carrier Licence (certificate reg. no. CBDU400611), our VAT registration, our 35+ years of combined trade experience — evidenced, not just claimed.
Criminal record checks. Because we work in and around people’s homes, our team is criminal record checked. We’ve always been DBS checked as standard — now that’s independently verified too.
References from real customers. Trading Standards spoke to the people who matter most: the clients we’ve actually worked for.
A commitment to ongoing monitoring. Approval isn’t forever by default. We’re monitored to ensure a high level of customer service continues, and we receive ongoing advice on Trading Standards legislation to keep us on the right side of every rule.
They Even Quizzed Us About Our Address
To give you a flavour of just how thorough the grilling was: we were quizzed on why our registered office address is different from our trading address. Our trading address is in Weymouth, where we are based — but our office address is registered with our accountant. This is a normal process that many businesses use for the reduction of administrative errors, increased efficiency, mail handling, VAT and tax compliance, and the handling of paperwork and submissions to Companies House.
And because radical transparency is rather our thing, here it all is in black and white.
Company Number: 11641998 (that link takes you straight to our live Companies House record).
Registered Office Address: 18 Manor Courtyard, High Wycombe, HP13 5RE.
VAT Number: 483072978 — verifiable on HMRC’s official VAT checker.
Trading address: Weymouth, Dorset, where you’ll actually find us, our vans and our team.
What The Grilling Changed
A proper audit doesn’t just check a business — it improves one. We came out of the process sharper than we went in:
Our Terms and Conditions were completely overhauled to be more user friendly. Plain English, fair terms, no small print designed to catch you out.
Our complaints policy was updated. Not because we field many — but because a clear, fair route to resolution is what a professional business owes its clients before anything ever goes wrong.
They didn’t catch us out. They approved us. And in April 2026, Dorset Council came out to hand Mark the framed Certificate of Membership in person — which now hangs proudly where it belongs, right alongside the paperwork that earned it.
Radical Transparency — Now With A Government Stamp
Regular readers will know we’ve built this business on showing our workings. We don’t deal in vague promises; we deal in numbers we’ve formally calculated and will happily defend:
4.9 ★★★★★ across 450+ reviews over 9 platforms — ranked 4th best in the UK.
97.6% of all calls answered within 3 rings — we guarantee to answer the phone.
94.2% of written quotations sent on the same day we visit you.
32.7% of our clients have returned for a second project — in renovation, that’s not a small thing.
We publish those figures because we’ve got nothing to hide. And that’s exactly why the Buy With Confidence audit held no fear for us. When your paperwork is already in order, when your quotes are already fixed-price and in writing, when your insurance is already comprehensive and your licences already current — an inspection isn’t a threat. It’s an opportunity.
“A business that’s doing things properly has nothing to fear from being checked. A business that objects to being checked is telling you something.”
The cowboys can’t join this scheme. Dave from down the pub isn’t on the register, because Dave doesn’t have terms and conditions, or insurance, or a complaints history he’d want anyone examining. The scheme exists precisely to separate businesses like ours from operators like him — and we couldn’t be prouder to be on the right side of that line.
The UIL Promise — In Writing
Approval or no approval, here’s what every UIL client gets as standard — in writing, every time:
Full protection: all quotations backed by a contract.
Guaranteed price — no hidden extras. A fixed-price written quote, not a worthless verbal estimate. If you’re not sure of the difference, we’ve written a whole blog on why it really matters.
Small deposits — only 10%. We don’t ask you to bankroll the job up front. Cowboys take half and vanish; we take 10% and turn up.
Warranty: all work protected by a 1-year Defect Liability Period.
All work insured: AXA policy no. TP1036224, covering work carried out by up to 4 people.
Licensed waste disposal: upper-tier Waste Carrier certificate reg. no. CBDU400611 — your rubble never ends up in a layby with your name on it.
What This Means For You
If you’re a homeowner, landlord, letting agent or facilities manager in Weymouth, Portland or Dorchester — or across our patch in Chickerell, Upwey, Osmington, Puddletown and Abbotsbury — here’s what our Trading Standards approval means in practice:
You can verify us independently. Don’t take our word for it. View UIL’s listing on the Buy With Confidence register — a government-run website, not ours.
You’re protected before we ever cross your threshold. Vetted paperwork, checked insurance, criminal record checks, fair written terms — all confirmed by an independent public body.
You have somewhere to turn. Buy With Confidence members are monitored, and the scheme takes customer feedback seriously. That accountability keeps every member honest.
You save your most valuable asset: time. What is more valuable to you — your time and energy, or waiting at home for three different tradespeople to visit and give you a quote?
And of course, everything that got us approved in the first place doesn’t change:
“We turn up. We answer the phone. We do what we said we would, when we said we would do it.”
The Bottom Line
Anyone can say they’re professional, trustworthy and reliable. We’ve been saying it since 2018 — it’s practically our mantra. The difference, as of April 2026, is that you no longer have to take our word for it.
Dorset Council Trading Standards vetted us. Trading Standards grilled us — for six months. Trading Standards approved us.
If you’re struggling to find reliable tradespeople, then going ahead with UIL is the right decision — and for the first time, that’s not just us saying so. It’s the government’s own consumer protection officers.
Checked by the people who catch the cowboys — and approved.
