From humble beginnings of a one man band on a bicycle, to a full team and multiple vehicles, here’s a recap of everything Upcycle Interiors Ltd has achieved over the years.
A recap of everywhere we've been, before we tell you where we're going.
Eight years ago, Upcycle Interiors Ltd (UIL) didn't have an office or a van, it had a pushbike, a phone number, and a promise to turn up.
Today's the day we mark that properly. Not with a sale, not with a gimmick… with the actual story, in order, warts and all. And maybe some bloopers. Because a business that's been trusted to turn up for eight years didn't get there by accident, and it's worth remembering how it actually happened.
Before UIL — the roots
The story doesn't start in 2018. It starts way back at primary school, where Mark first Met Jason. Then, at secondary school, Mark and Lisa became classmates in year 9. If only they knew then they would all eventually be working together!
The story continues with a BTEC in Construction from Weymouth College in 2002, and a move to Plymouth that turned into an Architecture degree by 2006 — and then a move to London with, by all accounts, a car boot full of stuff and nothing else.
Mark spent the next few years finishing a Post Graduate Diploma at London South Bank University and working as a RIBA Part 2 Architectural Assistant, before a further nine years at a high-end interiors company specialising in stone and marble installations across Belgravia, Knightsbridge and Chelsea.
Then, in 2012, the project that actually started everything: Mark's own repossessed one-bed flat in South East London, renovated with upcycled and reclaimed materials while he was still living in it. Lisa even helped out on this one by taking a sledgehammer to the bathroom wall! It's the earliest root of "upcycling" on record — years before it became the company name.
That same year, Mark met Carla (also from Weymouth), who later became his wife and who was busy finishing a renovation of her own back home. A second London renovation followed in 2015. By the time the seeds of UIL existed on paper, three renovations had already been completed.
2002 — Mark finished Weymouth College (BTEC in Construction; GNVQ in Construction & The Built Environment) and moved to Plymouth
2006 — Mark finished his Architecture Degree in Plymouth (worked as an architectural assistant) and moved to London
2009 — Mark finished his Post Graduate Diploma at London South Bank University; finished working as RIBA Part 2 Architectural Assistant
2012 — Mark's first-ever renovation: his own repossessed one-bed flat in South East London, done with upcycled and reclaimed materials while he was still living in it — the earliest root of "upcycling" on record. Mark met Carla, who later became his wife
2016–2018: From A Bike To A Company
The UIL Facebook page went up on 5 January 2016, and three days later, on 8 January, came "The First Instalment" — UIL's very first blog post, and the moment the idea of Upcycle Interiors was actually born. A trade directory listing with Bark followed that April.
By 2018, after nine years in high-end London interiors, Mark left employment to trade on his own. That June, the first company was incorporated at Companies House — Upcycle Investments Limited. There was no office and no van…
The business began from the back of a push bike, with 12,000 dwellings within a one-mile radius — Mark rarely needed to travel far to find new clients.
The first clients came the old-fashioned way: word of mouth and RatedPeople, with Facebook, Bark! and Checkatrade following later. That same year, the fourth renovation project — Camber House, London — went through under the Upcycle Investments banner.
Then, on 25 October 2018, that entity was renamed and a fresh Upcycle Interiors Limited was incorporated. That's UIL's actual birthday — the date we mark every year, and the date this post goes out on.

2019–2021: Moving Home, And Riding Out Covid
In 2019, Mark and Carla moved back to Weymouth. Mark had spent thirteen years in London, and Carla — by her own account — had once said she'd never live there... She loved it. They arrived with two trucks full of their life, including two children, and Carla came on board as UIL's second employee. That July, the business was approaching its 100th customer; by October, a marketing relaunch marked the new Weymouth base.
Then came lockdown in 2020, and it hit the business hard — UIL was officially on furlough for what felt like forever. But it was also the year the first company van was bought. Before that, everything had run from a bicycle or a car. By November, UIL was actively advertising in The Register Magazine. UIL marked its third birthday on 14 October 2021, as things began edging back to normal.

2022–2023: Building The Systems
2022 is when the scaffolding behind the business — the actual, structural stuff — went up. The Productivity Triangle, the Three Pillars, and fixed-price quotation positioning were all established across that year, and they're still the systems running UIL today. The fourth birthday landed that October, and by November UIL was approaching its 300th customer.
2023 brought a harder call: UIL left Checkatrade, which had been a backbone of the business back in London but wasn't earning its keep in Weymouth. That September, UIL became involved with the B-side Arts Festival — one of the first community partnerships on record. The fifth birthday followed on 25 October.

2024: The Team Comes Together
This is the year UIL stopped being mostly Mark and grew substantially, by bringing in 2 new full-time members. Ryley started carrying out leafletting for the business early in the year, and the 400th customer arrived that February. Trustpilot joined the review platforms in March, and the website had its first relaunch that April. In June, the registered office moved to 18 Manor Courtyard, High Wycombe.
July brought Jason on board as UIL's third permanent team member — someone Mark had actually known since 1987, long before either of them was in this trade. August brought Lisa in as Marketing Manager, permanent at last after more than a year working alongside UIL self-employed — and someone else Mark had known a very long time, having gone through secondary school together from 1997 and actually worked together, albeit briefly, on the 2012 flat renovation. It isn't a coincidence that the team UIL built runs on people who've known each other for decades rather than months; it's rather the point.
By the sixth birthday post that October, the team had "known each other for more than 25 years.”
A new van joined the fleet the same week, as UIL’s birthday present!

2025: Awards, VAT, And A Wobble
March 2025 brought VAT registration — a milestone in its own right for a business that started on a bike. Ryley moved from leafletting to a hired tradesperson role that year too.
Then came UIL's first major third-party recognition: Silver, Independent Business of the Year, Weymouth Business Awards. Lisa collected the award on behalf of the team that May, alongside a nod to a 2023 Nextdoor "Neighbourhood Faves" recognition, and UIL was featured that same month in Wonderful Weymouth Magazine's business directory and in The West Dorset Magazine. A LUXlife national award followed — Best Property Maintenance and Renovation Company in Dorset.
It wasn't all upward, either — 2025 brought a mini "recession" and a genuine economic slowdown, the kind that tests a young business as much as any award validates it. UIL joined the Weymouth & Portland Chamber of Commerce that July, and Wonderful Weymouth Magazine ran a recurring feature from August. The "8th year of trading" was marked that October with a five-day "Birthday Bloopers" series introducing the team — and the year closed with a staff Christmas party and escape room night that, by all accounts, remains one of the best-loved posts UIL has ever put out.

2026: The Year It All Adds Up
This year alone would be a lot for most businesses. UIL was shortlisted for Best Tradesperson at the UK Small Business Awards (national) in March, and in April, Trading Standards Approved status came through — Dorset Council's ‘Buy With Confidence’ scheme, after six months of vetting. That same month, UIL won ‘Refurbishment Company of the Year – Dorset’ at the 2026 Prestige Awards, and a second website relaunch went live in mid- April.
May brought a feature in the Painting and Decorating Association's member spotlight bulletin, and confirmation as a UK Small Business Awards finalist. UIL formally joined the PDA that July. Then, in August, came the ranking UIL is proudest of: No. 1 in the UK out of 117 companies on FreeIndex, in the Home Improvement category — for a business that's been a FreeIndex member since 2018.
It's also worth mentioning something that's never quite made it into a blog before: UIL is a member benefit partner for the Community Association of Poundbury — one of the quieter partnerships, but one that speaks to the kind of business UIL wants to be in the community it works in.
Eight years in, the story isn't finished. It's still being built, one job and one person at a time.

Eight Years On
None of this happened because someone had a five-year plan taped to the office wall (although knowing Mark, he probably does have this on the pegboard!).
It happened because a business that started on a bike kept turning up, kept doing what it said it would do, and kept getting better at it — 97.6% of calls answered within three rings, in-house rather than subcontracted wherever possible, and roughly one in three clients trusting UIL with a second project.
Eight years, three company names, one bike, one van fleet, and a solid team that mostly knew each other, before UIL ever existed at all.
Eight years in, and we're still the same business — just better at being it.
