Your Hell - Our Dream

At UIL we love an 80's room, we don't mean the style, we mean a room that hasn't been touched since around 1980 / 1990. You know the type - beige and cream colours, brown mosaic patterns, dry & cracked walls, peeling / failing wallpaper, walls that need some real TLC, bad lighting, dingey, dirty, stains, dark woodwork...

Most people feel daunted by a such a room - you don't know where to start, its just so overwhelming and there are so many problems! You are well within your rights to "leave it for another day" because its just too big for one person to tackle on their own - our clients often call these the "room of doom".

Your room needs more than a facelift or a makeover and it certainly doesn't need the TV show "60 minute makeover" - more like 60 day makeover! You need the UIL team who can cram a month or fortnights worth of work into a week and work magic on your unloved living room or bedroom. You really do need a transformation and the benefit it brings to your mental health should not be underestimated.

Sometimes we call these projects "mini makeovers" or "mini renovations" because it really is that - it needs a team with every finishing trade under their belt, it is beyond "just painting" and it is all in the preparation (we call it "prep" for short) - carpentry to redo doors, handles and skirtings, plastering for areas of wall that are well beyond a tiny bit of Polyfilla, decorator for cornice, coving and wallpaper stripping (yes we use fabric softener to remove it - it really does work!), and then a skilled painter with a quality Arroworthy brush & roller sleeve to perfect the finish.

Our clients sometimes enquire about plastering, but we are yet to find a room that we cannot repair - most walls often look worse than they actually are. Obviously if you want an absolutely perfect and brand new wall then replastering is the way to go, but this comes with drawbacks too, such as the delay and time waiting days and days for it to dry (even weeks!), Then there's a delay between coordinating multiple tradespeople and booking their calendar slots back-to-back which is rarely possible - so there goes more time down the drain.

Normally rather than plastering an entire room we patch repair with undercoat plaster where required, use mesh tape for bridging & reinforcing cracks, and a specialist flexible filler where we think a crack may reappear. Sanding your entire room, every - single - wall - is also our standard process. We are considerate of your property so we use various different types of sanders with dust extraction to keep the mess to a minimum. We can get most old properties looking good again whilst also retaining a small amount of character and imperfections - we call this a patina. It is the story of life that the building has to tell us. The patina adds character but doesn't make the room feel unloved, neglected or in disrepair. This is why we love upcycling - if a 100 year property is made to be "completely new" with original skirtings replaced, dado rails and picture rails removed, and cornice removed "because its old" then we feel the character has been stripped out. We would prefer to preserve the heritage history of the period property rather than just replace everything.

For this particular project in question our client found us on Facebook after having previous bad experiences with unreliable tradespeople in the past - it is a story we hear day in day out. Our client then called our friendly receptionist on our local Weymouth landline number at 01305 584459

We always promise to turn up when we said we would, following this we were quick to quote and provided a fixed price quotation and discussed in detail what should or shouldn't be included in the job. The deposit was paid and the project was scheduled for after Christmas - when our client would be able to clear the necessary rooms.

Wallpaper stripping can be a soul destroying task but we find when we throw the team at it with "Monday Energy" we can get it done together. We understand the pain and stress during a refurbishment so we make sure to keep noise and dust to a minimum, protecting carpets, etc.

Genuinely we really do love these types of projects - to you, our client, you just want a nice home to live in, to us we relish the hard work, the slog that it is to clean and prep works. This is true upcycling - repairing something old and unloved, bringing it back to life. Interiors and refurbishments like this are honestly so satisfying that it makes all the hard work worthwhile.

Every pictures tells a story - we will let you make your own minds up about this transformation -
