From Drab to Fab: Full Flat Renovation with Stunning Results in Weymouth

Back in November, a local customer spotted our posts on Nextdoor and reached out by email, asking if we could handle a full renovation of his flat. Naturally, we jumped at the chance — these big projects are right up our alley!

The customer wanted a complete refurb, including a brand-new kitchen and two modern bathrooms. Since he wasn’t living locally during the work, meticulous planning and project management were key to keeping everything on track and ensuring smooth progress from start to finish.

Clearing the Way: Preparing the Space

Before any shiny new fixtures could go in, we had to clear out the old — that meant removing bathroom fittings, kitchen units, lino flooring, and even cutting a hole in the kitchen wall! Thankfully, since the flat was empty, we could tackle the chaos head-on without worrying about disturbing anyone.

KITCHEN TRANSFORMATION

The kitchen was our first major focus. We removed the sink and cabinets to make way for new carcassing, worktops, and a sleek new sink. Getting the flooring perfectly level was crucial for the plinth to fit evenly.

Our laser levels really earned their keep here — much faster and more accurate than traditional spirit levels! Once the units were built out, we added doors, end panels, and drawers before fitting the oven. The worktops went in next, with precision cuts for the sink and hob. We finished off by installing the fridge unit and wiring in the hob — a busy, successful first week on the project.

PAINTING & PREP

While Jason tackled the kitchen, Mark took charge of prepping the walls and woodwork for painting. This involved filling cracks and holes, washing down surfaces with sugar soap, and sanding everything lightly so the mist coat would adhere properly.

We removed the dated cornice in the living room - we co-ordinated with Joe Newton Electrical ahead of the program so that we could ensure the wiring for the spotlights was ready for us. They did a tidy job with minimal mess, which is why we work with them regularly.

The flat had some bold colors originally, so making sure the new white paint covered evenly was no small feat — some spots needed up to four coats! The result was a fresh, clean canvas that brightened the whole space.

In the usual UIL manner, Mark was using an upcycled paint pelican - made from an old food waste bin!

BALCONY

With a stunning view overlooking Weymouth Harbour, the balcony deserved some attention too. We gave it a thorough clean and spruced it up, making it a lovely spot to enjoy that scenery.

MASTER BEDROOM AND EN SUITE

The main bedroom was already a light base so it didn't take long to give it a refresh, with extra care taken to make sure the purple areas didn't show through.

We changed the light fixtures, radiator and window blind to bring it up to date.

The bathroom was originally the same colour scheme as the bedroom, so once we removed the shower unit, sink and toilet we had to repair the kick boards, and make good and paint over the purple walls. The customer had opted for a sleek grey design and it's just so luxurious!

BATHROOM

The bathrooms were a bit of a tag-team effort. We removed all the old fittings — shower cubicle, bath, sinks, and flooring — to get the space ready for the pros at Absolute Bathrooms, who did a fantastic job installing the new suites. (Fun fact: washing your hands out of a bare wall pipe isn’t exactly the height of luxury, but hey, all part of the job!)

Our customer was thrilled with the results, so much so that we’ve been invited back for more painting work on another property! It’s always a pleasure to help bring someone’s vision to life.

We received a wonderful Google review from the customer following the project and we are so thrilled that we could make the customer so happy! -

"I recently used UIL for the refurbishment of a flat in Weymouth. The project was a full refurbishment including ripping out all existing fittings, removal of all waste, knocking through wall, carpentry work, electrical installation work, flooring installation, prepping and painting of the whole property and installation of a new kitchen. Not living locally I gave the keys to UIL and they project managed the whole refurbishment. Whilst it's fair to say that UIL aren't the cheapest, you get what you pay for as the quality of work from Mark and his team is excellent. Mark likes to do things properly, has high attention to detail and takes genuine pride in his work and this shows in the quality of work which is absolutely first class. Another benefit of UIL is that they are happy to do any size of job from small handy man repair jobs through to whole property refurbishment projects so UIL can handle all your property related requirements. One of the other best things about UIL is that you have peace of mind as you know you are in safe hands. Mark is a pleasure to deal with and is totally trustworthy and reliable and you know the work will get done on-time and to a high standard. I highly recommend Mark and the team at UIL"
