Hair-raising Bathroom Electrics

Water and electricity in the same room sounds like a bad idea, until you look at how tightly the regulations actually control it.

If your home doesn't have a utility room, fitting a washing machine in the bathroom is a space-saving solution UIL has used on renovation projects since 2018. It's a common approach across Europe and America, and when you think about it, it makes sense: a kitchen is a food preparation area, whereas a bathroom already has the plumbing, drainage and ventilation a washing machine needs. The real question isn't whether it's a sensible layout choice, it's whether it's done safely and legally.

We fielded this exact question years ago in a MyBuilder forum thread, and it's one we still get asked on-site. The short answer is yes, you can install a washing machine in a bathroom, but only if you get several things right at once: the appliance itself, how it's wired, and whether the work is signed off correctly. Here's what's actually involved.

"i know its a very old question (7 years ago) but I thought I'd give an answer anyway as regs do change and it could be useful for someone else - a washing machine is allowed in a bathroom as long as the manufacturer (of the machine) says it's ok in a bathroom!

It MUST be fitted to a fused connection unit (in laymans terms, it looks like the connection for your boiler - a wire from the boiler, hardwired into the wall. inside that little box is a fuse). i.e you cannot just have a socket and plug the machine in. Any electrician will hardwire it in for you. That is according to IET 17th edition regulations so to answer the question - yes you can have a washing machine in a bathroom.... I'm currently doing exactly this in my renovation project im working on ps both previous posters incorrectly state the 3m rule, regs have probably changed since they stated those rules. IET 17th ed says "Current-using equipment The 16th Edition made a clear division between equipment permitted to be installed in zone 1 and equipment permitted to be installed in zone 2. In the 17th Edition no requirements are stated for zone 2. This is because all circuits of the location now require RCD protection. The term “current-using equipment other than fixed current-using equipment” no longer appears in the 17th Edition.

Current-using equipment, such as washing machines and tumble dryers for example, continue to be allowed to be installed beyond zone 2, subject to manufacturers’ approval similar to the 16th Edition. Such equipment must be supplied by means of a fused connection unit within 3m horizontally from the boundary of zone 1. Beyond 3m they may be supplied by means of a plug and socket-outlet."

Two details in that answer have since moved on: we're now well past the 17th Edition, and the 3-metre distance mentioned above was reduced to 2.5 metres in 2022. Here's the current picture.


Understanding bathroom electrical zones

UK wiring regulations treat any room containing a bath or shower as a "special location", covered by Section 701 of BS 7671, the IET Wiring Regulations. Special locations carry stricter rules than the rest of your home because the risk of electric shock is far higher when skin is wet.

The room is divided into zones based on distance from the water. Zone 0 is the space inside the bath or shower tray itself. Zone 1 is the area directly above it, up to 2.25 metres from the floor (or, for a shower with no tray, 1.2 metres out from the shower head). Zone 2 extends a further 0.6 metres beyond Zone 1. Anything further away than that is generally described as outside the zones, though even here the regulations still apply.

A washing machine in a bathroom will typically sit outside zones 0 to 2, but "outside the zones" doesn't mean "unregulated". It just means a different, more familiar set of rules applies.

What's allowed, and what isn't

Equipment inside Zone 0 must be designed to be safely submerged and run on a very low voltage supply. Zone 1 requires equipment rated at least IPX4 for splash resistance, and all circuits in the room, wherever they sit, must now have 30 milliamp RCD protection. This is one of the more significant changes since older editions of the regulations: it used to matter more precisely which zone a fixed appliance sat in, because Zone 2 had its own specific rules; now every circuit in the room needs RCD protection regardless, which is part of why the guidance has simplified over the years.

Standard 13-amp socket outlets are not permitted within 2.5 metres, measured horizontally, of the Zone 1 boundary. In most ordinary UK bathrooms, that rules out a standard socket almost anywhere in the room. This is precisely why a washing machine can't simply be plugged into a wall socket the way it would be in a kitchen.

Why it has to be hardwired

Because a plug and socket isn't permitted close to Zone 1, a washing machine or any other fixed appliance in a bathroom is instead connected through a fused connection unit, often shortened to an FCU. This is a small, permanently wired unit, similar in principle to the connection you'd see for a combi boiler, with a fuse rated correctly for the appliance sealed inside it.

An FCU does two jobs a plug and socket can't do as safely in this environment. It gives you a proper means of isolating the appliance for maintenance or in an emergency, and it removes the risk of a plug being pulled out and pushed back in with wet hands, which is exactly the kind of everyday moment the bathroom zone rules are designed to guard against. Your electrician will size the fuse to the appliance and position the FCU so it's genuinely reachable, not tucked behind the machine itself.

Check with the manufacturer too

Meeting the wiring regulations is only half the job. Not every washing machine is approved by its manufacturer for bathroom installation, and warranty terms vary between brands, sometimes regardless of what the wiring regulations technically permit. Before you commit to the layout, it's worth checking the specific model's installation instructions, or asking the manufacturer directly, so you're not caught out later by a warranty exclusion you didn't know existed.

It also isn't a job to attempt yourself. Fitting a washing machine in a bathroom sits well outside anything sensible to DIY, and needs to be planned and installed by a qualified, registered electrician from the outset.

Building regulations: why this needs to be notified

There's a second layer that's easy to overlook: Part P of the Building Regulations. Any fixed electrical work carried out in a room containing a bath or shower is notifiable, regardless of how small the job is. That's different to most other rooms in the house, where minor alterations to an existing circuit often aren't notifiable at all.

In practice, this means the work needs to be carried out by an electrician registered with a competent person scheme, who can self-certify it, or it needs to be notified to your local authority building control directly.

Either way, you should end up with a proper compliance certificate. Keep hold of it. Missing electrical certificates are a common snag when selling a property, and a bathroom is exactly the kind of room a solicitor or surveyor will ask about.

The regulations keep moving

It's worth being honest about how often this area of the regulations changes, because it genuinely does. The distance rule for socket-outlets near a bath was reduced from 3 metres to 2.5 metres under Amendment 2 to BS 7671, back in March 2022.

Since then, the wiring regulations have moved on again: Amendment 3 arrived in 2024, and a further update, Amendment 4, was published in April 2026 and is now the current edition, with the previous version due to be withdrawn in October 2026.

None of the more recent amendments have changed the bathroom-specific rules described above, but it illustrates why this article, and any advice you're given on-site, needs a date attached to it.

Professional advice should always be sought at the outset of any project involving bathroom electrics, both to confirm the current position and to make sure your specific layout is assessed correctly.

If a bathroom washing machine isn't right for you

A bathroom isn't the only answer to a missing utility room. Depending on the layout of your home, it's often worth having a conversation about whether a converted airing cupboard, an understair cupboard, or a small external utility space would suit you better, before committing to plumbing and wiring a bathroom for the job.

Which option makes most sense usually comes down to where your existing water supply and drainage already run, so it's worth having that conversation early, alongside the electrical planning.
